Rainy Day Rambling

Well, well, well....It's been quite a span of time since I sat down to compose a blog entry, which was mainly caused by my biggest obstacle - tortuously slow wi-fi here at Elite.  After complaining and whining to George for over six weeks while watching my screen attempt to open up my browser, open an email, download or upload, I bit the bullet and ordered Internet from the local service provider, Spectrum. Now, I'm once more spoiled with dedicated, high-speed Internet connectivity! One of my tag lines reads, "Life is Beautiful," and now, it's beautifully FAST. Ahhh. The little things that make me smile.

We have spent the majority of our time here in Florida enjoying the bright sunshine, warm weather, listening to the mocking birds' endless impressions, continuing the upgrades to our lot and enjoying the company of friends - mostly New Yorkers!

Today finds us enjoying a much-welcomed rainy day. The grass is sucking it up faster than it can reach the ground due to continued drought conditions in Central Florida. All of the retention ponds are either dried up or look like small puddles, so you shouldn't hear too many complaints about the clouds and drizzle.

Since the conditions are so dry, the fire departments conduct regular "controlled burns" to eliminate, what they categorize as, "potential fuel," which is actually multiple acres of dead trees, branches and over-growth. While there is controversy about the practice, it does make sense to eliminate it prior to a lightening strike or human induced fire, but the smell can be disturbing when it's close to our vicinity.

To change to a prettier subject, the Mocking Birds are an interesting absurdity and distraction. Most people here complain about their constant daytime and nocturnal singing, but it is the only bird I ever hear in this area, so if I had to pick one bird, it might as well be one that can mimic dozens of birds.

Mocking Birds are about 7" long, mate for life and live about eight years in the wild and up to 20 years in captivity. They are the State bird of Florida and males do most of the singing. Amazingly, a male bird was once observed to have a repertoire of over 200 different bird songs.

Our lot is coming along quite nicely thanks to the fact that George got a job at a local Lowe's store. We purchased a bunch of stuff utilizing his Employee Discount Card and ended up spending his first four paychecks even before receiving the first! Here are a few before and after shots...

Not pictured on the lot, but our new Griddle Grill.....So far, loving it. Made some wicked bacon and eggs on it.

The new job at Lowe's is going well. George likes the fact of "having a reason to get up and get going," which he was beginning to actually miss since retiring. I've made it a point of setting an alarm and getting up earlier also. Today, the extra time and rain afforded me the opportunity to share this update.

Besides by beautiful metal crane depicted above, here are a couple of  other "new additions" to the lot.

New Red Hibiscus and two wooden & metal birds.
George's choice: Yellow Hibiscus with red center along with a fern and Croton Plant.
That's it from beautiful, rainy, cloudy Florida. Hope all is well with whoever reads this entry and whatever you need is being provided to you this day.

Snow, cold, wind

Add caption
OMG. That's the best way to start this blog. It began to snow around 9 pm last night and the temperatures dipped down to 21°. We had every weatherproofing method in place, but, even with the furnace blasting, fireplace glowing and a space heater set to high, it is still a bit chilly. It looked like about 2" fell overnight,  but with the cold and wind, it looked like a blanket of ice covered the trees and car.
Allie is situated under a copse of tall pines and whenever the snow fell off the branches, it sounded like tennis balls hitting the roof. Lucy did not like it at all.

I spent as much of the day as I could with the three musketeers, since this would be our last day together in awhile. We went to Tanger Outlets, back up to the cabin for lunch and then back to Appalachian Ski Resort. Those kids (biggest one-my son) really love to snowboard. I got tired just watching them. I especially can't believe how the littlest one keeps up with her big brother and sister.

After the sun went down, we picked up and headed out to dinner. The first place I tried to get us a table at for a party of nine was a no-go. Joan found another place and "G" and I were so surprised to find out it is one of three restaurants with locations that "G" and I have very recently visited. What a coincidence. Or, what a small world, or what fate found us at "Six Pence Pub." The photo below was recently  taken in Savannah.

Saying good night was actually saying "so long, until next time." I leave my grandchildren in the very capable hands of their mom and dad, great parents who work so well together to raise independent, free-thinking, individuals.  Not an easy task, especially in these days and times.

We are back home in Allie now and Lucy is purring softly on the ottoman, happy that her mommy and daddy are home-sweet- home.

Deep thought for the day:  Grandchildren are like snowflakes - no two are ever alike and you adore each one for their unique individuality.

Thanksgiving Day 2014

The best profession must be that of a Meteorologist. It seems to be the only job where you can guess what is going to happen, take credit when you are right, blame someone else when you're wrong, and not get fired. Poor Mother Nature, for having to take the rap, so often, and from so many.

Thanksgiving Day 2014
I'm grateful this day for a multitude of reasons, but especially for my #1 guy, for our Tiffin Allegro, and of course, Lucy! I'm thankful, too, that all the predictions fell short for our immediate area and we were only teased with about an inch of snow, at most. The photos that follow are time-lapsed from Croton and a few shots from our ride up to Washingtonville, NY this afternoon, where the predictions were more on target.

There must be 50 ways to leave your…RV park?

Well, we are on the brink of an impending “snow event,” that has been forecast to hit our area tomorrow and continue into Thursday early AM, which is Thanksgiving Day.

"G" had both symptoms.
Besides the much publicized and news-worthy snow event, “G” had the unpleasant malady of a severe toothache this weekend. Thankfully, his dentist was able to see him Monday night and a root canal was started and is scheduled to be completed on December 5th. The timing was actually good, since the last thing you want to do, when in a lot of pain, is see a dentist you don't know and trust.

Tomorrow, I shall contact the campgrounds I had booked for our trip down to Florida, which will be an easier task than having to postpone our North Carolina trip for one week. As Kermit the Frog, so wisely said, “It’s not easy being green,” so is it true that it’s not easy asking parents of three youngsters to swap a weekend when they are all so involved with extra-curricular activities, have many friends, parties, plans and celebrations, especially at this time of the year. We planned the original weekend over two months ago.

Thankfully, “G’s” tooth feels much improved already and the NC weekend was easier to reschedule than anticipated. Now, all we really need to be concerned about is the snow. “G” had a fleeting thought of going back to the house to weather out the storm there, but when we realized how much stuff needed to be packed and transpored, it didn’t make sense to attempt such a feat. Therefore, we have decided to stay put, pull in our slides (to protect them from the weight of the snow) and wait out the storm. We already have the little Sentra tucked away in the garage and a full tank of propane on board Allie to keep us warm and cozy.

We are in-between the 3"-5" and 5"-8" prediced area.
I'll be sure to provide a photo update of our first snowstorm in an RV, that is, only if the weather people are on target.

Paul Simon sang it well...50 Ways to Leave your Lover...Here is my version of "50 Ways to Leave your RV Park:"

"The problem is all inside my head" he said to me,
"This tooth hurts so much, that I can hardly see.
I'd like to help you, in your struggle to be free,
with fifty ways to leave this RV park."

He said, "It's really not my habit to insist,
and I hope you don't act up or bother to desist,
but, I'll repeat myself, if you really must insist,
There ARE fifty ways to leave this RV park."

You just release the brake, Jake
Make a new plan, Stan.
Reprogram the GPS, Les
And get this rig free.
Hop of the bus, Gus,
No need to discuss much,
Just dump the black tank, Hank,
and it will get us all free.

He said, "It grieves me so that I am in such pain.
I wish the dentist would prescribe a litttle somethin' to make me smile again."
I said, "I'd appreciate that, but would you first explain,
about those fifty ways to leave this RV park?"

He said, "Why don't we both just sleep on it tonight?
In the morning, after the Vicodin, we both will see the light. "
Then he kissed me, and I realized he probably was right,
There are fifty ways to leave this RV park!

Deep thought for the day: Go ahead, I dare you. Make all the moves you want in the game of life. If the Master Chess Player chooses to NOT move your pawn, then you remain put, until He/She decides to move you to another square. Deal with it! vc

Listen to the music of the falling rain....

Portion of lyrics from the song, Rain, by Creed
I feel it's gonna rain like this for days
So let it rain down and wash everything away
I hope that tomorrow the sun will shine
With every tomorrow comes another life...

All day today we have dealt with on-and-off heavy rains that are beginning to affect our immediate camping area.  The ground is softening and the RV seems to be settling into the gravel and mud. Puddles are forming in the roadways and gullies, and boots will become a necessity if it doesn't let up soon. Gracie, "G" Lucy and I are handling it just fine.

We spent most of the day on a shopping spree at Camping World up in Kingston, NY with our camp neighbors.  We had a list of "Needs" and "Wants," and it seems like too many "Wants" found their
way into our basket along with the many "Needs."  I'm bad, but apparently, "G" is worse, but we did get some pretty nifty things. We got a very much needed outdoor rug (thank you Teri), a welcome mat, tire covers, windshield scrubber, bucket, Swiffer, mattress cover, key holder, wall-mounted shampoo dispenser, trash can, towel hooks, picnic table cover and padded bench covers (I didn't even know they existed!). It's amazing the things you need/want with RV life.

Lucy peering out of the booth
The list that remains is longer than the items we already purchased, but it will forever be a "Never-Ending List," just like the "Never-Ending Story."

Although "love" is never in question, "G" and I still do like each other, in spite of the close quarters, missing our recliners and adjusting to a simpler and less cluttered life. I am finding it both wonderfully relaxing and invigorating.

Lucy is finding more and more comfy spots.  Tonight, she is hanging out in the dinette booth. A new spot, and one that offers a prime view up and down the coach.

The rain is pounding on the roof, and, if it continues, will provide a soothing sound to lull me to sleep. So, as the lyrics to Creed's song goes, "Let it rain down and wash everything away."  Just as long as it's not Graciwith "G" Lucy and me aboard.

RV Event of the Day:  Last night we accidentally left one of the exhaust fan vents open and I was greeted with a puddle of water on the counter and floor. Nothing a bit of paper towel couldn't handle.

Deep Thought of the Day:  "Rain, rain go away, come again another day. "G" and "V" want to play."
